The government is set to abolish the means test for Carer’s Allowance, increasing support for caregivers with a €260 weekly payment
Currently, caregivers get €260 a week, but that’s about to change. The government is also looking to boost financial help and introduce a pay-related benefit for those who have to leave work to care for someone full-time.
So, what’s Carer’s Allowance? It’s a weekly payment for folks who care for someone due to age, disability, or illness. Right now, you need to meet certain income limits to qualify. If you care for more than one person, you can get a higher rate.
To be eligible, you must care full-time for someone who needs it for at least a year. You also need to be over 18 and not working too many hours.
While the means test is still in place, it’s good to know it’ll be gone soon. Right now, the Department of Social Protection checks your income and that of your partner to see if you qualify.
Your payment can be affected by your total income, but there are some allowances. For singles, the first €450 isn’t counted, and for couples, it’s €900.
If you want to apply, just grab the application form from your local office or online. It’s a straightforward process, and soon, it’ll be even easier for caregivers to get the support they need.
