Galway: Schools and colleges are shutting down because of Storm Eowyn. The Red Weather Warning is serious, and it’s all about keeping everyone safe.

On Wednesday, the National Emergency Co-ordination Group made the call. They said all educational institutions in red warning areas should close. It’s a precautionary measure.

Before the storm hits, schools need to check if they can safely open. They have to think about student safety, travel conditions, and advice from emergency services.

If there’s flooding or fallen trees, it’s better to close. Safety comes first, and schools are advised to be cautious.

The University of Galway will also close during the Red Weather Warning. They have a clear policy about this. If the warning is red, they shut down until it’s over.

During past storms, they’ve told staff and students not to travel if they’re in affected areas. It’s all about safety.

Employers in the area are encouraged to let staff work from home if they can. Only emergency workers should be out and about.

Galway isn’t alone; nine counties are under this Red Weather Warning. Met Eireann issued it as strong winds are expected to cause damage.

Barra Best from the BBC explained that this storm could be as intense as Hurricane Debbie from 1961, which was deadly.

That storm took 18 lives and caused a lot of destruction. So, this is serious stuff.

To study Storm Eowyn, advanced weather planes are heading to Shannon Airport. They’re taking samples as the storm approaches.

The NOAA operates these planes, usually flying in hurricane zones. But now, they’re chasing Storm Eowyn, which has winds like a Category 2 hurricane.

The planes can stay in the air for hours, gathering data. They left Canada early in the morning and should arrive in Shannon by afternoon.
