Galway: A speeding driver was caught this weekend while gardai were on patrol. They were enforcing a crackdown on speeding across the country.

The driver was clocked at 83kph in a 50kph zone on the R364 in Kilkerrin. This was part of a four-day operation that started on Thursday, January 30.

During the St. Brigid’s Bank Holiday, gardai reported three fatalities from road collisions. They also arrested 163 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

According to An Garda Síochána, the operation began at 7:00 am on January 30 and will continue until 7:00 am on February 4. So far, there have been 14 fatalities on Irish roads this year.

Throughout the operation, gardai conducted mandatory intoxicant testing and set up high-visibility checkpoints. Over 1,000 drivers were caught speeding in just four days.

Some notable speeds included 83kph in a 50kph zone in Galway and 125kph in a 100kph zone in Kildare. These numbers are concerning, especially with fewer drivers on the roads due to Storm Éowyn.

Gardai are urging everyone to drive carefully this Bank Holiday weekend. The risk of serious accidents is highest between midday and 3pm each day.

They remind all road users to avoid driving under the influence and to plan a safe way home if socializing. Drivers should slow down and stay focused on the road.
