An unexploded mortar shell led to the closure of Haverton Hill tip, diverting traffic and turning away waiting lorries and customers.
The Haverton Hill Waste Recycling Centre was shut down while experts assessed the situation. Police cordoned off the entrance, keeping everyone safe.
This all started around 2 PM on Thursday. Customers with appointments were turned away, and lorries full of waste had to wait outside.
One witness saw staff gathered outside, while traffic was redirected. A council spokesperson confirmed the police cordon was necessary due to the unexploded device.
They advised residents not to head to the site and to find alternative routes. Cleveland Police also announced the road closure and asked drivers to avoid the area.
Customers were directed to Hartlepool’s tip, where no appointments are needed. The Haverton Hill site is managed by both Stockton and Middlesbrough Councils.
