Colchester: A five-year-old boy named Freddie tragically died after a large mirror fell on him. This happened in a Fenwick department store.
According to the inquest, Freddie didn’t push the mirror hard. It was likely already unstable. The mirror was 8ft 6in tall and weighed between 132lb and 176lb.
The incident took place on July 27, 2021. Police were called after the ambulance service reported a child was unconscious. Freddie was first taken to Colchester Hospital, then to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where he sadly passed away on August 2, 2021.
Detective Chief Inspector Michael Pannell shared that the mirror had come loose from its bracket. CCTV footage showed Freddie touching the mirror before it fell.
Mr. Pannell noted that Freddie didn’t apply much force to the mirror. The coroner found the video evidence too distressing to show in court.
Freddie’s mother, Natasha, shared a heartfelt tribute, saying he was always smiling. His father, Andrew, expressed that part of their world feels missing.
The inquest is ongoing and expected to last several days.
