Redcar: A Conservative councillor has been suspended after making a controversial comment. Justin Thompson compared the Gaza conflict to the Holocaust on Facebook.

His comment came in response to Labour MP Luke Myer’s post about Holocaust Memorial Day. Myer emphasized the importance of remembering the Holocaust victims and preventing hatred.

Thompson, who represents Skelton East, expressed support for the memorial but questioned the government’s actions regarding Gaza. He suggested a “holocaust” was happening there.

Myer replied, stating the Middle East situation is horrific but not comparable to the Holocaust. He highlighted the unique nature of the Holocaust’s atrocities.

The Jewish Labour Movement expressed deep concern and called for disciplinary action against Thompson. Initially unaware of his suspension, Thompson reiterated his views and planned to issue a statement.

Councillor Carolyn Curr mentioned that the Conservative central headquarters would handle the matter. A party spokesman confirmed Thompson’s suspension is pending an investigation.
