Galway: Weather experts are sounding the alarm about Storm Eowyn. They say it could be the worst storm in years. Warnings are getting serious, shifting from orange to red in some areas.
This morning, Galway and the west are already feeling the wet and windy effects. But the worst is yet to come. Intense winds are expected to hit late tonight, especially along the south-west coast.
Starting at 2am, a series of Status Red wind warnings and Status Yellow rain alerts will kick in for several counties, including Galway, Mayo, and Cork. These alerts warn of damaging winds over 130km/h.
In fact, Mace Head, Carna, might see record gusts, even higher than those during Hurricane Debbie in 1961. Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather says this storm looks significant, and he doesn’t usually exaggerate.

Winds could exceed 130km/h, with heavy rain and even snow in some spots. It’s rare for Met Eireann to issue a Status Red warning nationwide, so this is serious.
The National Emergency Co-ordination Group is urging everyone to stay indoors. Schools are closing, and workers should avoid commuting until the storm passes, likely by Friday evening.
Officials warn that these winds could threaten lives and property. They advise people to shelter in place and limit travel to essential trips only. Expect dangerous conditions, fallen trees, and power outages.
