Teesside: A coin expert has found a rare 50p piece from 2011. This coin could be worth a whopping £3,000 to collectors. Some have even sold for £3,500!

The coin celebrates the 2012 London Olympics. It features a swimmer in goggles and a cap. Even though millions were made, an unusual feature makes some coins more valuable.

The expert from the TikTok account UK Coin Hunt said, “£3,000 for just this 50p, which is absolutely bonkers.” The early versions of the coin had water lines on the swimmer’s face. Later versions removed these lines, making the lined ones rare and valuable.

You might not find this coin in your change, but it’s possible. The expert mentioned, “You’re not likely to find it in your change, but you might see one online.”

A couple of years ago, these coins were around £1,000. Now, they can go for £2,500 to £3,500. The Britannia Coin Company lists an uncirculated version for £3,995.

This coin is designed by Jonathan Olliffe and is a favorite among collectors. The common version shows the swimmer clearly, while the rare version has watery lines across the swimmer’s face. Only about 600 of these rare coins were made, making them the rarest 50p ever released.
