Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen shared details about a pilot for trackless trams, set to launch by the end of 2025, enhancing local transport options.
Tees Valley: Mayor Ben Houchen has confirmed exciting plans for trackless trams. These trams will be part of a pilot program starting before the end of 2025.
During a recent interview, Mayor Houchen mentioned that they will begin procurement soon. The first trams are expected to be operational by the end of this year.
The pilot will run for 12 months at Teesside Airport. This initiative is part of a larger funding plan totaling £978 million for the Tees Valley.
In January 2024, the Tees Valley Combined Authority approved plans to use some of this funding for 15 electric, trackless trams. These will serve key town centers like Middlesbrough and Darlington.
Mayor Houchen noted that while they can start the pilot without full funding, expanding the service will need additional financial support. The government is currently reviewing this funding.
He expressed optimism about the funding review, which will clarify the financial situation this summer. The goal is to have the trams running between towns by the end of 2026.
The project aims to use smart technology for efficient transport. The trackless trams will offer a convenient hop-on, hop-off service around town centers.
These vehicles will be electric and autonomous, designed to operate safely on roads. They can also be adjusted for seasonal events.
Additionally, there are plans for an autonomous shuttle service at Teesworks and Teesside International Airport. This service will help staff and visitors move around the area.
Smaller pods will connect the park and ride site to various locations, including the airport terminal. The success of these trials will determine if they become permanent.
