Mya Malthouse, 20, has fulfilled her dream of becoming an on-call firefighter after finishing her A-levels and is excited to serve her community
Mya always wanted to help people, so she started her journey at Durham Fire Station. She began training in September 2024. She said, “I’ve always wanted to be a firefighter.”
After chatting with folks in the service, they suggested starting as an on-call firefighter. So, she applied, passed the online tests, and then went to Consett Fire Station for more tests.
Mya enjoyed her training nights at Durham Fire Station. Besides firefighting, she works part-time at Next. But her goal is to land a full-time firefighting job.
Her family is super proud of her. Mya shared, “My mam is really proud. I’m the first in my family to become a firefighter.” They’ve been really supportive of her journey.
She encourages anyone interested to go for it. “Everyone has been really supportive since I joined,” she added. If you’re thinking about joining as an on-call firefighter, check it out if you live or work near a fire station.
