Stockton’s Labour-led council is pushing for a full inquiry into grooming gangs after a Conservative proposal passed, highlighting urgent concerns.
The council plans to ask their leader, Councillor Bob Cook, to reach out to Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. They want to stress the need for this inquiry.
There was a Labour alternative on the table, but it didn’t pass. The vote ended in a tie, and the mayor, a Conservative, had to break it. Conservative Councillor Niall Innes pointed out that without a proper review, victims won’t get the justice they deserve.
He believes this issue needs serious attention from the government. Cllr Tony Riordan, the Conservative group leader, echoed this sentiment, saying a national inquiry is crucial to uncover the full extent of the scandal.
Both Labour and Conservative members agree that the reports about grooming gangs are alarming. They all want to protect vulnerable kids from exploitation. However, Labour is concerned that a full inquiry might slow down the government’s current efforts to safeguard children.
They argue that the government is already working on recommendations from a major inquiry into child sexual abuse. Labour Councillor Paul Rowling emphasized that this is a cross-party issue. He wants to ensure that the focus remains on catching the criminals involved.
He suggested a targeted inquiry to address gaps in the current safeguarding measures. Some members believe local inquiries won’t have enough power to make a real difference.
Labour’s deputy leader, Cllr Lisa Evans, wants to avoid making victims wait for years for justice. Independent councillors also weighed in, with some supporting the call for a full inquiry.
Despite the political differences, there’s a shared concern for the victims. Cllr Riordan criticized Labour’s response, saying it’s been inadequate. He believes a national inquiry is necessary and won’t delay current actions.
After the Labour amendment failed, the Conservative motion passed. The council is now tasked with engaging local stakeholders to better protect at-risk youth.
