Darlington’s Hopetown struggles as low visitor turnout causes financial difficulties. Delays and underestimated challenges impact revenue significantly.
The council overspent because of the site’s delays. They think the Leisure department will need £574,000 extra, as Hopetown is expected to make £600,000 less than planned.
A new time travel train ride opened late, in December. This led to a predicted £270,000 income loss, along with other delays that happened with the siding and showfield. These sites are key to drawing visitors.
Locals should visit Hopetown, along the old railway line, as it is the railway’s 200th birthday. Council members urged people to visit and support it, stating that the attraction cannot fail.
The car park wasn’t used much, with people parking on nearby streets instead. Visitors said the car park on John Street is hard to find.
Less visitors meant less money from sales. Expected from shop and food sales was £160,000. The council said they underestimated the project’s challenges, noting that some attractions didn’t open on day one.
The council increased the budget for the site by almost 24 percent to help them keep growing the railway attraction. The 2025/2026 budget went to £469,000.
Over 90,000 people visited Hopetown since July. Consequently, the council thinks things will improve soon, and that train rides and steam engine views will draw more visitors.
Hopetown is on track in visitor spending, but visitor numbers lowered the budget predictions. The plan adapts to current events, and awards and a good reputation help the slow start. Thoughts about parking and budget changes, along with savings and events, will happen soon.
