Irish Rail is launching a new warning system on February 10th, near Merlin Park in County Galway. It enhances safety at busy railway crossings.
The location is a crossing near Merlin Park in County Galway. People use this crossing themselves. The new system tells users about trains.
People will feel safer when they cross because they will know when it is safe. Irish Rail said the system works like traffic lights. This system warns about coming trains and shows when it’s safe to cross.
It’s at 63 crossings nationwide now. They want to add it to 11 more places this year. This upgrade improves safety a lot. The system gives real-time alerts about trains.
These warnings have cut down accidents. The system reduced “near misses” there, which includes trains and people crossing. The new tech makes things safer and also puts people more at ease.
This benefits kids and vulnerable people. It also reduces wait times. People wait around 21.5 seconds, on average and the system tells them when to go.
The lights are a visual cue. It cuts down on confusion too. The lights make safety clearer and they work in all kinds of weather, even at night.
Traditional signs are not as good. Kay Doyle spoke about the new system. She is Irish Rail’s safety director. She said safety is their top priority because railways and roads always have risk.
Doyle said the detection system helps. It lowers risk for everyone and it makes crossing the railway safer.
