Gardai can now chase motorcycles and scramblers, enhancing safety and tackling crime effectively. This change aims to curb reckless driving and criminal activities.
Dublin: Gardai can now chase after motorcycles and scramblers. This change helps catch dangerous drivers more effectively.
Previously, officers couldn’t pursue bikers due to safety concerns. Criminals took advantage of this ban.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris announced that officers can now chase these vehicles if it’s safe to do so.
He stated, “If it’s appropriate and proportionate to the threat, they can pursue.” This policy shift aims to address rising crime involving scramblers and e-bikes.
Criminals often mocked Gardai by speeding past them, knowing officers couldn’t act. Gangs used these vehicles for robberies and other crimes.
After a meeting with the Policing Authority, Harris confirmed the new policy allows pursuits and the use of stinger devices on these vehicles.
He emphasized the need to adapt to the growing use of powerful electric bikes in criminal activities.
The Garda pursuit policy was updated last year, allowing officers to drive against traffic under certain conditions. This change aims to improve safety during chases.
Guidelines were revised as criminals began driving on the wrong side of the road to evade capture. Sometimes, pursuits must be called off for safety reasons.
