Galway: RAG Week is back! The University of Galway’s student union just launched it. This week-long celebration starts on Sunday, February 9, 2025, and runs until Friday, February 14, Valentine’s Day.

Students will raise funds for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre and Galway Autism Partnership. The schedule includes a Firewalk, head shave, charity auction, and a fun run. There’s even a Galentine’s Day brunch and a 5 A Side tournament!

RAG Week was paused in 2011 due to alcohol-related issues but returned in 2024. Last year’s events were a hit, raising significant funds and creating a great atmosphere. This year promises to be even bigger!

On Monday, February 10, the RAG run starts at 12:30 PM. It costs €10 to enter, and all proceeds go to charity. The theme for fancy dress is Heroes and Villains. Plus, Flirt FM will kick off a 24-hour radio-thon.

Tuesday features a pop-up charity clothes shop from 11 AM to 3 PM. It’s hosted by Galway Simon Community in Áras na Mac Léinn. Later, the Firewalk will take place from 6 PM to 10 PM, and Mayo Monday will rock with The Tumbling Paddies and Jack Reilly at Sult.

On Wednesday, students can shave their heads for charity from 2 PM to 3 PM. The SOS event starts at 7 PM, featuring ten acts across two stages for 2,000 students. It’s set to be a memorable night!

Also on Wednesday, the SU Charity Cup runs from 11 AM to 4 PM, with a €500 prize for the 5 A Side Football Competition. Writers Soc will host a Blind Date With a Book event from 12 PM to 3 PM for just €5.

Thursday brings a Galentine’s Day brunch with Prosecco and pancakes from 11 AM to 12 PM. Proceeds support the charities. Later, Sult will host their famous Speed Quizzing event at 7 PM.

On Valentine’s Day, February 14, a charity auction will take place at Sult. Colm O’Donnellan will lead the auction, and tickets are just €5. The week wraps up with Akumakon at 8 PM on Friday.

Chloe Anderson, the Students’ Union Vice President, expressed gratitude for the chance to bring RAG Week back to its fun and fundraising roots. She noted last year’s success and the opportunity to make new friends while supporting great causes.

Galway’s RAG Week isn’t the only event in town. Atlantic Technological University will announce their program soon, and local pubs and clubs will also host events to celebrate RAG Week.
