A driver in Co. Mayo was caught speeding at 190 km/h in a 100 km/h zone. Their car was seized, and they face court action just before new speed limits take effect.
Co. Mayo: A driver was caught speeding at almost 200 kilometers per hour on a national road. This reckless act has drawn attention on social media.
The Garda seized the driver’s car and set a court date. The incident happened on the N5 near Charlestown.
According to the Garda Traffic account, the driver was traveling at 190 km/h in a 100 km/h zone during rainy weather. They were stopped and arrested.
Driving 90 km/h over the limit is dangerous, especially in the rain. Wet roads can make stopping much harder.
This incident comes just days before new lower speed limits are introduced across Ireland. Starting February 7, speed limits on rural roads will drop from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.
New signs will show these changes. The Rural Speed Limit sign will also be updated to reflect the new limit.
The government is making these changes to reduce road deaths and serious injuries, which have been rising in recent years.
Later this year, urban speed limits will decrease from 50 km/h to 30 km/h. National secondary roads will also see a drop from 100 km/h to 80 km/h.
