Middlesbrough: A councillor is not happy about plans for 234 new homes. Councillor Curt Pugh, from the Conservative party, represents the Normanby ward. He thinks there are several problems with the proposed development at Normanby High Farm.

He’s worried about traffic. Cllr Pugh predicts an extra 500 cars on Skippers Lane. That’s a lot of added congestion! He mentioned that despite local objections, more development seems likely.

At a recent council meeting, he pushed for developers to contribute to local infrastructure. This is important for the community. Deputy council leader Carrie Richardson said the plans include various types of homes. They’re also looking at parking and school needs.

Originally, the council planned for about 150 homes and a community woodland. But that woodland idea is off the table now. Instead, they’re adding open spaces to the plans.

Residents are not thrilled. Over 70 objections have already been filed. The site is quite large, over ten hectares, and surrounded by existing homes.

The developers, Strata, say their proposal meets national and local guidelines. They believe it will help the council with housing needs. They also claim the site is in a great location.

The layout includes 529 parking spaces and access from Skippers Lane. A transport assessment suggests the development won’t overload the roads.

Last month, plans for another site were rejected due to concerns about the property mix. The council has new housing targets to meet, so they need to build around 559 homes each year.
