Eaglescliffe: A former carer took advantage of an elderly woman’s trust. Nicola Wake, 42, stole over £12,000 from a 100-year-old resident at Reuben Manor Care Home.

She used the woman’s bank card for personal expenses like hotel stays, Uber Eats, and Amazon orders. Wake was caught when the bank declined a payment, raising suspicions among staff.

Police found a hotel receipt with her name and address, leading to her arrest. Wake pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges in court.

The elderly woman, who passed away in 2022, had her care fees covered by her pension. Staff noticed suspicious transactions, including taxi fares and online orders.

An investigation revealed Wake had been stealing for years, even forging bank details to redirect colleagues’ salaries to herself.

During sentencing, the judge acknowledged Wake’s tragic personal loss but emphasized her breach of trust. She received a 15-month suspended sentence and must complete community service.

Detective Sergeant Claire McNeill condemned the crime, highlighting the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals. She urged anyone with concerns about elderly care to report them to the police.

Reuben Manor has been contacted for a comment.
