Redcar: A takeaway called Mo’s Palace got a hygiene rating of one. Inspectors found rat droppings during three visits in just five days.

The owner, Mo Mohammed, says they’ve fixed the issues. He believes the rats came from the alley behind the shop. Mo has applied for a re-rating and feels confident about it.

The inspection report showed dried rat droppings in the food room under the freezers. They found more droppings in the same spots days later.

Inspectors noted that pest control measures were lacking. They said Mo needed to improve procedures to keep pests out.

The report also mentioned blocked wash basins, which made it hard for staff to wash their hands. There were gaps in the plumbing that could let rodents in.

Mo said it cost him a lot to fix everything, but he’s done it. He insists, “It’s all under control now.” He’s hopeful for a better rating soon.
